Bring a LARGE piece of chalk !
View from the front entrance to the museum, looking towards the port.
You forgot to bring the piece of chalk so we could find our way out of the museum! It was easy to get lost here, the hallways wind around, there are areas closed off because they are unsafe.
When the earthquake in 1980 damaged so many historical buildings the city began a massive effort to repair and preserve them. Significant progress has been made but the building is so large it will take some time. Meanwhile many items are archived and not on display.
There are mysterious narrow stairways that lead to closed upper areas……private access for the nuns who lived here. Massive closed doors with antique locks that look like they have been closed for decades. Some dark recesses in the hallways actually creepy . Very easy to get turned around and it took me some time to figure out how to get back to the entrance. They had to come and find us!
Here are more photos of the treasures We discovered there.
beautiful, thank goodness they came and got us, we could be in there for days!
